Help My Hair is Thinning! Part One

Thinning Hair

Hair pin2

Thinning hair can result from stress, illness, a low thyroid, routinely prescribed drugs over-processing with perms, bleach, toxic colorants, and hair dryers. For women, hormonal swings after pregnancy or menopause, birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be responsible. Then, there is Male Pattern Baldness (MPB), basically a hormonal imbalance, that can begin at age twenty on. Both men and women can be affected.

But wait! I’m getting ahead of myself. First, allow me to introduce you to your hair.

Picture a Garden

A GardenThink of your hair as a bustling, dynamically active garden that needs to be fed and pruned. How well your garden grows depends greatly on what’s happening to the “plants” beneath the soil as well as above and how you nurture your garden from both inside and out will result in your “crop.” If an event occurs to disrupt growth and cycles go awry, hair loss occurs.

A hair’s growth cycle has three distinct, but concurrent, phases: anagen (growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting)

phases. Each has its specific characteristics that determine hair length. All three phases occur simultaneously. In other words, one hair strand can be in the anagen phase while another is in the telogen phase.

About 90% is in the anagen, or growth phase, which lasts from two to eight years, depending on genetics. The catagen, or transitional phase, lasts about two to three weeks. At this time, the hair follicle shrinks. In the telogen phase, hair rests for two to four months, hair growth stops and the old hair detaches from the hair follicle. A new hair begins the growth phase, pushing the old hair out. Stem cells are responsible for hair production.

If we look at your root system, we see that the large pear-shaped, keratin-producing papilla, is found at the base of the hair follicle.

The hair matrix, a collection of epithelial cells usually interspersed with pigment-producing melanocyte cells, is the source of hair growth. It is also involved in transferring melanin to hair to give it color. During the active hair growth phase, the cells in the matrix grow quickly, causing the hair to grow longer.

The bulb, fits like a cap over the hair papilla at the bottom of the hair follicle. Located in the outer sheath, it houses several types of stem cells which supply the entire hair follicle with new cells.

Other structures associated with the hair follicle include the infundibulum (the cup in which the follicle grows), the arrector pili muscles (responsible for “goose bumps”), the sebum (“skin oil”) producing sebaceous glands and the apocrine (sweat) glands. Hair follicle receptors sense the position of the hair.

12 Causes of Temporary Hair Loss

Physical Stress

Stress of SurgeryTrauma of any kind can shock the hair growth cycle causing what is called telogen effluvium or temporary hair loss. This can include anything, from surgery, to having a baby, involvement in an auto accident, to sudden, dramatic weight loss, to even having the flu. Happily, your hair will start growing back as your body recovers. It takes three-to-six months after the trauma. In the case of dramatic weight loss, you are looking more at six months for hair regrowth.

Emotional Trauma

Also temporary, although less likely to cause direct hair loss, emotional trauma weighs in. A divorce, the death of a loved one, caring for an invalid parent or spouse can indirectly precipitate hair loss; since emotional trauma is closely tied to physical stress, it can exacerbate an underlying physical problem.

Vitamin A Overdose

Too much of a good thing: vitamin A overdose can trigger hair loss. according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Five thousand International Units (IU) daily is considered the adult dose. Fortunately, cutting back your dose will allow your hair to regain its normal growth. On acne meds and experiencing hair thinning? Check to see if your prescription includes vitamin A and tally up all your supplement sources.

Lacking Protein

Lacking protein in your diet? Your hair, which is predominantly keratin (protein), will show it two or three months after you’ve cut back on your protein intake; definitely reversible by adding in more protein back into your diet.

Iron Deficiency Anemia

Around one in 10 women, ages 20 through 49, suffers from Iron Deficiency Anemia. Easily determined by a blood test, a simple iron supplement should be the solution.

An Underactive Thyroidunderactive thyroid

Hypothyroidism, can contribute to hair loss. Natural or synthetic thyroid medications can address the issue. Once thyroid levels return to normal, your hair should as well. Unless… your hair started thinning after taking thyroid meds. In  that case, your prescription may be the culprit.

Low Vitamin B Levels

Not readily seen in the U.S., Low Vitamin B Levels are another correctable cause of hair loss. Dietary changes as well as supplementation to include vitamin B should see your hair becoming fuller.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy drugs to beat back cancer are aimed at rapidly dividing cells. Like cancer cells, rapidly dividing hair cells are also affected. After chemotherapy, hair grows back but may have a different color and/or texture, possibly curly when it used to be straight.

Medicationsmedications

Other Medications that trigger hair loss include certain blood thinners, cholesterol lowering beta-blockers for blood pressure, methotrexate to treat rheumatic issues and some skin conditions, lithium for bipolar disorder, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including ibuprofen… Amphetamines for dieting, antidepressants, including Prozac and Zoloft, ulcer and thyroid medications, prednisone, and Levadopa for Parkinson’s disease can thin your locks. Always check for possible negative effects when taking a new medicine. If your medication is thinning your hair, your doctor may be able to adjust your dose or change you over to another prescription.

Anabolic SteroidsBopdy builder

Anabolic steroids—the type overused by some to bulk up muscle—can cause hair loss. The drug impacts the body with the same mechanism as polycystic ovary disease (PCOS), according to the American Academy of Dermatology. The condition should reverse once off the steroids.

TrichotillomaniaCompulsively playing with hair

Compulsively playing with, and pulling at, your hair where you actually pull your hair out may be an impulse control disorder called Trichotillomania. Four times as common in women as in men, it often begins before the age of 17. Antidepressants and/or behavioral modification therapy can help.

Your Hair Style or StylingBraided hair

Your Hair Style or Styling may be the cause of your hair loss. Vigorous, extreme, over-styling, like tight braids, hair weaves or corn rows can cause traction alopecia. Hair treatments, like perms, chemical relaxers to straighten hair, or other harsh chemicals or high heat applications can directly affect the roots of your hair root. Over the years, this type of abuse may permanently affect your locks.
The logical answer, of course, would be to stop the styling abuse, get back to nature, air- or sun- dry your hair and become aware of the value of all-natural, organic products for beautiful, healthy hair, many of which you can find in your kitchen cabinets, fridge or local health food store. .

Healthy Hair Care

Already thinning? I strongly suggested you take a look at Anthony Morrocco’s lunar hair chart which shows the best days to “prune” and grow a new “crop” in your garden.

Anthony says, “Those concerned with hair thinning should alternate between days for root work, thickening, and strengthening.”

And as you have seen, the overall state of your body and mind will dramatically affect your hair. So it goes without saying that a well-balanced lifestyle, including a good diet, sleep, adequate water intake, exercise, and time to relax all play a part as do keeping an eye on your prescriptions for possible unwanted hair loss side effects and reading the labels on your haircare products, along with proper hair brushing and scalp massage.

hand with herbsLook for products that are all-natural and organic and/or wild-crafted. This includes hair coloring. Choose all-natural hennas which can be gotten in many shades. And be certain to carefully read the labels to be sure your “natural” hair colors haven’t included an ingredient or two that shouldn’t be in there.

As I say in my book Treat Your Face Like a Salad, “What you put on your skin winds up within.” This includes your hair and scalp.

If you are one of my regular readers, you know that I am in love with Anthony Morrocco’s products. They are all natural, raw, vegan, and directly nurture a healthy “crop of hair.”

Keeping in mind that scalp reconstruction, the most important step to healthy hair regrowth can take from one to three months, listed below are a few of the ingredients and some of the Morrocco Method Products. Ingredients are not only all-natural, raw and organic, they are properly processed at the peak of their energy.

Horsetail, taken internally as readily assimilable orthosilicic acid, can also benefit hair as well as skin and nails.

A hint if you’re going shopping, remember, scalp reconstruction is the most important step to healthy hair regrowth. It can take from one to three months. Considering the Euro Oil for healthy hair regrowth? For best results, Euro Oil requires time to allow the hair follicles to absorb the oil thoroughly and condition your hair. To penetrate the entire scalp, the recommendation is to apply the oil during the day, leave it in all night and, if possible, until the next day.
